Clay Shooting

Hawkeye Hunting Club installed a brand-new trap and skeet range in 2020 to expand clay shooting options for our guests.  The range looks out over a ravine to a beautiful grove of trees and is located near our hunting fields, chukar shoot and European tower.

In trap, clay targets are thrown away from the shooter from a “bunker”.  The machine can oscillate up and down and right and left creating a variety of shooting angles. For beginners, the machine can be set not to oscillate so learning to shoot is easier.

In skeet, the machines throw clay target to cross from side to side.  One machine is set 10 feet above the ground (high house) and one is set 3 ½ feet above the ground (low house).  Both machines throw targets at fixed angles.  To complete a round, shooters rotate through 8 stations placed in a semi-circle.  A set sequence of throws includes single presentation (one house throws at a time) and double (both houses throw simultaneously).

Both trap and skeet are designed to simulate the flight paths of birds and can be used as a warmup activity before hunting or as a fun stand-alone shooting competition.  A round of trap or skeet includes 25 clays.

A covered pavilion with seating is located nearby to service both the Trap and Skeet Range and the Chukar Shoot.
